Today The Tea Council announced The Conservatory at The Lanesborough Hotel as the winner of the Tea Guild´s prestigious Top London Tea Place Award for 2005.

Throughout November, December and January, a team of mystery tea tasters from The Tea Council´s Tea Guild secretly visited London tea venues and hotels in a bid to find the capital city´s most delightful afternoon tea experience.

The staff at the Lanesborough Hotel impressed the judges with their tea knowledge, willingness to advise and attentive, engaging manner. The judges also commented on the faultless presentation and quality of the tea served, and the delicious selection of accompanying cakes, pastries and sandwiches – not to mention the historic lemon curd! Afternoon tea in The Conservatory at The Lanesborough Hotel was judged to be a glorious treat and an experience that was second to none!

There continues to be tough competition for the title of Top London Tea Place as competitors are not only marked on the quality of the tea, the variety on offer and the way it is served, but on the standard of service and the overall ambience.

Previous winners of the prestigious Top London Tea Place award include The Ritz (2004) The Four Seasons Hotel (2003) and The Dorchester (2002).

The Executive Director of The Tea Council, William Gorman comments: “This competition recognises and rewards excellent standards of tea-making in both traditional and contemporary British hotels.

“For those of us who enjoy tea as an important part of our lives, you could not find a better venue in which to enjoy afternoon tea. The tea was always bright and hot and ranged from delicately fragrant to brisk and full of character, the service was exceptional and the oriental garden setting was fresh, welcoming and peaceful. The pianist helped to set the mood, transforming our afternoon tea experience into an unforgettable occasion.

“The Tea Guild awards highlight the ever-increasing popularity of afternoon tea by placing importance on the quality of the whole afternoon tea experience - the teas and food offered, plus the service and the surroundings.
